Biography

Abi Zakarian is an award-winning British-Armenian playwright based in London. Her plays include: I AM KARYAN OPHIDIAN produced by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for the Sam Wanamaker Theatre; ENOUGH, produced by Small Truth Theatre for the Kensington Karavan Festival; FABRIC, produced by Damsel Productions for SOHO THEATRE and a London Community tour; I HAVE A MOUTH AND I WILL SCREAM produced by Joyous Gard for VAULT Festival where it won the festival’s 2018 People’s Choice Award; THE BEST PIES IN LONDON, produced by Rift Theatre for their immersive Shakespeare in Shoreditch festival; THIS IS NOT AN EXIT, produced by the RSC for The Other Place and transferred to the Royal Court; LULU7, produced by So & So Arts at Drayton Arms Theatre; SWIFTER, HIGHER, STRONGER, produced by Roundpeg Theatre at the Roundhouse; A THOUSAND YARDS, produced by Feast Theatre at Southwark Playhouse. FABRIC, produced by Tremers Theatre, played at Underbelly, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016 and won a Fringe First Award. 

Previously one of the writers involved in the playwright-in-residence Schoolwrights scheme in East London Schools and a participant in Theatre Royal Stratford East’s Musical Theatre Workshop, she is also a current member of the RSC and Hampstead Theatre’s writers groups. She regularly runs workshops for both Caspa Arts and W1 Workshops.

In 2018 Abi was awarded an MGCFutures bursary to research and write her play about the Armenian genocide, MOUNTAIN WARFARE. She is also the recipient of a Peggy Ramsay Foundation grant. Abi is currently developing FABRIC for television. She is also co-writing the Brit School/Andrew Lloyd Webber Bridge Foundation musical for 2020 at Southwark Playhouse, and is under commission with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for. In March 2020 she is co-curating with Morgan Lloyd Malcom one of the Bunker Theatre’s ‘Takeover’ weeks for their final season.
